An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment represents a versatile approach to skin rejuvenation. The initial IPL device received FDA approval in 1995 for treating dilated blood vessels, known as telangiectasia, commonly referred to as spider veins. At Saffron, we employ the FDA-approved Lumenis M22® device.
IPL “photo facial" treatments are also effective in addressing vascular lesions and pigmented lesions. Practitioners often utilize this treatment for photo rejuvenation to diminish brown spots resulting from sun exposure, aging skin, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Furthermore, IPL can significantly reduce the appearance of broken capillaries and facial redness, including conditions such as rosacea, acne, and acne scars. Additionally, IPL has demonstrated efficacy in treating dry-eye disease. Although not its primary indication, an IPL photo facial treatment may also promote collagen production and ameliorate signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.
The functioning of an IPL device involves the emission of an arc of light energy that penetrates all levels of the skin without causing harm to the epidermis, thereby resulting in minimal to no downtime post-treatment. This light-based intervention is predominantly applied to areas including the face, neck, décolletage, and hands, although it is generally effective across all regions of the body. The head of the IPL device typically possesses a larger size compared to most laser spot sizes, facilitating the expeditious treatment of larger body areas.
Generally, individuals require a series of 3 to 5 IPL photo facial treatments to achieve optimal results; however, practitioners may reassess progress following each session. Treatments are usually scheduled three to four weeks apart.
